I’m generally an advocate of the 'every day is Earth Day' mentality. Why think about our planet on one day of the year when it’s our home every day of our life? So, when I think about Earth Day, I try to think of it as not only a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and preserve our planet, but as a day I can think about and express gratitude for my opportunity to spend my life in a truly unique place in the universe. Here are a few suggestions for unconventional ways to celebrate Earth Day that will help you slow down and reconnect with the earth and the present moment.
Connect with Nature
Discover a nearby park, woodland area, hiking trail, hidden shoreline, or any serene location where you can reconnect with nature. Tune into the melodies of chirping birds perched in the branches, the gentle flow of a nearby brook, the rhythmic crashing of waves, or the rustle of leaves blowing in the breeze. Engage your senses by reaching out to touch the bark of trees and the soil beneath your feet. Allow yourself to feel connected to the earth in ways you may overlook on a day-to-day basis.
Go on a Self-Guided Clean Up
Head out on a self-guided clean-up mission through your neighborhood streets or head down to the nearby beach to tackle litter. As you walk, envision yourself tending to a cherished friend in need. Take a moment to extend gratitude to the planet for its boundless generosity, while acknowledging the regrettable mistreatment it endures. Think about the profound repercussions of plastic pollution on our environment, particularly its devastating impact on our oceans, projected to outweigh fish populations by 2050. Then ensure proper disposal of collected trash by securely covering trash cans, preventing any chance of litter being whisked away by the wind or carried by birds back to the sea.
Unplug for the Evening
Take advantage of the extended daylight by inviting loved ones for an outdoor dinner on your patio or enjoy a picnic at a nearby park. Embrace the serenity of nature by refraining from television or screen time after 5pm and avoid running major appliances. Let this be a time to connect with the people we choose to share the earth with.
Watch the Moon Rise
Indulge in the mesmerizing spectacle of watching the moon rise. In Santa Barbara, venture to Shoreline Park for an unforgettable view of the full moon ascending over the majestic mountains or tranquil ocean. This awe-inspiring sight serves as a reminder of our humble place within the vast expanse of the universe and the interconnectedness of all things. Though the April full moon is officially on April 23rd, take the opportunity on Earth Day to witness the enchanting near-full moonrise, basking in the harmony and equilibrium it bestows upon us.
